The bottom line is that only the body can heal itself! Simply stated doing all you can to stay healthy is your best protection against disease and getting full enjoyment from life.
The body is programmed for wellness. Wellness is your best option. This is accomplished everyday through your choices regarding nutrition, exercise and lifestyle.
Most doctors agree that the body when functioning properly has the ability to heal itself. Our immune systems are continuously destroying viruses, bacteria, fungi, cancer cells to keep us disease-free.
When we fail to supply our body with vital nutrients it fails to protect us not only from disease but from hormonal balance and premature aging as well.
Too much health emphasis today is on the magic bullets advertised on television to fix sickness. You may have been thinking that drugs cure disease.
Wellness is about the body not symptoms and a disease name. Even with drugs, the body does the healing.
Drugs are designed to offer symptom relief by blocking or intercepting natural biological activity until the body fixes itself. The medical profession will openly admit they have no cure for autoimmune diseases and only treat to offer relief to its patients.
By definition all drugs are toxic and have serious side effects. Taking drugs should never be a casual decision. Taking multiple drugs can be deadly. Always inform your doctor of all the drugs you are using before adding more.
Many people are also turning to non-drug alternatives such as exercise, improved diets and nutritional supplements. JAMA reports that 50% of Americans have gone to alternative care physicians and that 70% are taking nutritional supplements.
The supplement industry is a 20 billion a year industry. Disease continues to increase and also at a younger age.
The Disease Name = Sickness Message
The disease name = sickness message has also been very effective at influencing the way we seek wellness options other than standard medical care.
When you visit a health food store you will likely hear many people asking the store clerks I have this symptom. What supplement do I need for that? Did you get that symptom because of a lack of a supplement in your diet?
People have learned the disease name lesson well. Let's look at it from a different perspective. You do not have a disease name = a sickness problem. Your doctor or health food store does!
Disease names are the doctor's job. It's what they are trained to do. What you have is a body's not working right problem. Think of it as a wellness deficiency. Now with that in mind, you can do something. So it's time to start shifting the paradigm.
The FDA states that only drugs can cure, treat or mitigate disease. They also say the job of nutrition is to support normal structure and function in the body.
However, people frequently complain that after they tell the doctor about their health problems, all the doctor does is prescribe medications to treat the symptoms. Well, that in itself is not surprising since about 90% of the drugs produced can only suppress symptoms, not cure the problem.
When we go to the health food store we use exactly that same disease name = sickness model to the problem. We are using supplements now instead of drugs and we are getting the same results.
We are spending 20 billion dollars annually on nutritional supplements and every disease category is still increasing. They are also occurring at younger ages.
Now that doesn't mean that nutritional supplements are not important or necessary. It does mean we need to look at nutrition from a wellness model, not a disease model.
Wellness is the quality or state of being in good health, especially as an actively sought goal. Wellness does not just happen it must be achieved on purpose.
