Throughout recent history, the baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) have always led the market trends. When this generation was babies, the diaper and baby food industries increased; then when they got to the age they could drive cars, the car industry took off; then in their 20’s-30’s they were getting married and starting families and wanted their own homes, so the real estate industry boomed. Now these market leaders are reaching their 60’s and what do they want now? To feel good and to look as young as possible!
This is causing a new industry to emerge according to Paul Zane Pilzer, in his book “The Wellness Revolution; How to Make a Fortune in the Next Trillion Dollar Industry.” He describes the wellness industry as uniquely different from the well-known sickness industry. The Wellness Industry: Products and services provides proactive people with/without an existing disease—to make them feel even healthier and look better, to slow the effects of aging, and help to maintain good health.
Boomers may be leading the market trend but in an article from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says that well over half of the population want to find ways to increases their chances of staying healthy by becoming proactive about taking care of their health and what they eat. People are smart; they realize they have to take responsibility for their own health.

With the commercial farming practices today the food producers are more interested in quantity than quality. Due to green harvest, commercial processing and generically modified organisms, the nutrient levels in our foods are being drastically reduced. It’s well known that in the last couple of growth days that vegetables and fruits naturally ripen on the vine, that is when the important nutrients pass into the fruit or vegetable but when they are picked green, they miss the chance of growing all those nutrients.
When tomato producers want to ship tomatoes from California back to the Midwest, if the producers waited until the tomatoes were fully ripe and then shipped them, they would be tomato paste by the time they reached Nebraska or Texas, so they pick them rock hard green for shipping. And then gas bombs causes the tomatoes to turn a little red, but it does nothing to replace the missing nutrients.
Here’s an example of what’s going on and how badly missing nutrients are from our foods today. In 1951 the nutrients you would get from one orange, today it would take 10 oranges to get the same!
In 1951, a woman would have to eat 2 peaches a day to receive the USDA recommended daily amount of vitamin A. Today she would have to eat 53 peaches!
To get the same amount of iron today that you would have gotten from a cup of spinach in 1951, you would have to eat 65 cups of spinach! I doubt even Popeye would like eating that much spinach!
